It’s that time of year again: tax season. While filing season lasts from the end of January to mid-April, the IRS strongly encourages people to file early and electronically.
The first day to file taxes in 2019 for Tax Year 2018 is Monday, January 28. Prior to that date, taxpayers can prepare their taxes with tax professionals or filing software, which will turn the returns into the IRS when the system opens on the 28th.
The 2019 tax season ends on Monday, April 15, 2019. Individuals have until then to file income tax returns, estate income tax returns and trust income tax returns for Tax Year 2018. You can request a six-month extension to file these returns, and April 15 is the deadline for the extension request.
Tips for Filing Taxes for Tax Year 2018
- Because of the government shutdown, receiving your 2018 tax refund may be delayed. The IRS announced in early January that it will call back employees to process tax returns. Taxpayers are still expected to file on time.
- The IRS encourages taxpayers to file their tax returns electronically in order to minimize errors and for faster refunds.
- Taxpayers can use local tax professionals and CPAs to help prepare and file their 2018 tax returns. A local tax professional, like the staff at Watson CPA, will find every applicable tax deduction and credit for both your Federal and Indiana tax refund.
